A 3D scanner measures the shape of a physical object without touching it, capturing millions of surface points and reconstructing them as a digital model. Where a caliper returns one dimension and a coordinate measuring machine returns the points an operator nominated, a metrology-grade scanner records the whole surface — so a part can be compared against its CAD model in full, with every deviation shown as a colour map. That underpins most modern dimensional inspection, tooling and mould verification, wear and deformation assessment, and reverse engineering of parts with no surviving drawings.
